When it comes to making a reel, it's easy to get overwhelmed by all the possibilities.
That's natural and normal! 🙌
It might not seem like it but we have to start somewhere and we only get better through consistent practice, research, and enough preparation, BUT
👉 How do you know where to start?
👉 What should you be doing in order to create an engaging reel that will set you apart from other others?
Here are five things you should remember when creating your reel:
1️⃣ Who is this for? What problem am I trying to solve?
Use these questions as your lighthouse and do not be easily swayed by what's trending.
Sure you can use trending audio, but ensure that it's relevant.
Although it's tempting to follow the latest trends and use the most popular audio, it's also important to make sure that your content is relevant to who you are trying to reach and the problem you are trying to solve.
By doing so, you can establish yourself as an authority in your specialization and build a community of engaged followers.
PRO TIP: Your content should always come with value - not just with trends.
2️⃣ Are the texts visible enough? Is video/audio quality good?
Even if your target audience is Gen Z or millenials, don't quickly assume everyone has 20-20 vision. 👀
Keep in mind that people will be viewing it on different devices, with varying screen sizes - mostly through their mobile phones.
◾ Check that the texts are visible and are right where they can be clearly seen.
◾ Check the quality of your video - is it not blurry/pixelated?
◾ As for the audio, check if there is no static/background noise especially when you're talking on a Reel.
If you want to use background audio: > It's best that it's not overpowering your voice or what you're saying
> Adjust the volume to 2-5, whichever is applicable
3️⃣ Match your content with the audio that you'll use with it.
Just because the music is going popular or trending does not always mean that you're obligated to use it if it doesn't align with your content.
Think as if you're your ideal audience and it's the first time you're seeing this reel.
👉 How would you feel?
👉 Would it make sense?
👉 Would it get your attention?
👉 Would you want to watch it and stop scrolling?
If it didn't feel like it make sense, review and assess!
Check that your texts are also synchronized with the music and especially if you're making some actions/pointing to go with it, timing is key!
4️⃣ It does not have to be perfect or flawless. It's okay to make mistakes.
This is why continuous practice leads to better and improved reels AKA still not perfect but waaaay better than before.
If there are days you don't feel like showing your face on Reels, you can always opt to do faceless reels which is what I usually do. 😊
Embracing imperfections and showing vulnerability on Instagram Reels can actually show the real/raw YOU and help you connect with your audience on a deeper level.
Authenticity is highly valued by users on the platform, and by being yourself, flaws, and all, you're showing the unfiltered version of you aka the reality when the social media filters are removed.
5️⃣ Have fun, and enjoy the process from feeling cringey to feeling heck yeah!
This is one of the most important parts. The moment I started enjoying creating reels, my personality just showed in my videos.
When did I realize this? It was when I got excited about planning and recording reels - laughing at my own bloopers and doing it again.
Even if I'm doing reels for years now:
> I still messed up
> I still sometimes forget what I should say
> I stiiiilll repeat my recordings for the nth time! 😂
⚡ If I messed up, that's okay—I'd just start again and make my next take even better.
⚡ If it took me longer than usual to get everything done (because of course, it did), that's okay—I could just take a break and come back later when I was feeling refreshed.
Yes, it can get exhausting, but you can always choose to make it fun.

Creating content for Instagram Reels should be a balance between providing value, showing what your business is, you having fun and even making mistakes!
Don't be too hard on yourself if your content isn't perfect - the more you practice, the better you'll get! ✨
